The Acadian Archives documents, preserves, and celebrates the culture, way of life, and history of the Franco-American and Acadian people of the Upper St John River Valley. We serve the University community, individuals, and organizations as a repository for manuscript materials and audio-visual documentation relevant to regional folklore, folklife, and history. In addition, we offer on-site reference assistance for our archival collections, regional history, genealogy, folklore and folklife, outreach presentations, and workshops.

The Acadian Archives

Located at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, the Acadian Archives might be one of the most significant sites on the St. John Valley/Fish River National Scenic Byway. It is the premier center for the study of Acadian history and culture in the U.S. Northeast. As well as serving as a research center, the Archives promote and celebrate Acadian life through cultural programming. Events include book launches, exhibits, performances, educational activities for K-12 and college students, and an annual lecture series.

Open to the Public

The Acadian Archives are open to anyone who is curious about the history and culture of the Upper St. John Valley. Staff are present to provide tours, offer information about Acadian history, and assist visitors and researchers with archival collections. Holdings include maps, photographs, oral interviews, and a large collection of Acadian and French-Canadian genealogical reference material.

The Archives are open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. throughout the year. Special events can occasionally disrupt these hours of operation. Researchers are encouraged to plan their visit with staff ahead of time.
